The Tajik government recently sentenced Doniyor Nabiev, also known as “Boboi Dona”, an 87-year-old former member of the Islamic Revival Party of Tajikistan (IRPT), to five years in prison. According to Mahmadi Teshayev, a member of the Supreme Council of the IRPT and former head of the party’s Rudaki district branch, the 87-year-old man was imprisoned for helping political prisoners and their families. Strongly condemning this inhumane act, the National Committee for the Release of Political Hostage and Prisoners of Tajikistan (NCRPH) urges the relevant authorities in Tajikistan to release this man immediately. NCRPH also hopes that all international human rights organizations and an active diplomatic corps in Tajikistan will not remain neutral and will make every effort to free this old man.
Doniyor Nabiev, known as «Boboi Dona», was born in 1934 and lives in the village of Gulbutta in the Chimteppa village of Rudaki district. He was the former head of the IRP investigation department in the Rudaki district. According to Mahmadi Teshayev, a member of the Supreme Council of the IRPT and former head of the party’s Rudaki district branch, the man was arrested in September 2020 for helping «political prisoners» and sentenced to five years in prison at the end of December.
Mahmadi Teshayev wrote in a letter to the National Committee for the Release of Political Hostage and Prisoners of Tajikistan: «The 87-year-old Boboi Dona was detained by the Tajik National Security Service in September at his home in the village of Gulbutta in the Rudaki district and held in the Dushanbe City Detention Center until his conviction. He was under strong psychological pressure and was sentenced to five years in prison in late December.”
In the letter, Teshayev added that the reason for the 87-year-old man’s arrest was to help IRP prisoners and their families. He added: «This enlightened old man spent his whole life with his friends who are now in prison, so bread and food did not go through his throat. he said, my friend’s situation in prison is very hard, how can eat my bread alone? So he thought it was his human duty to divide his bread in half and take it to these prisons. He was arrested today for exactly the same «crime» and is being tortured.”
Teshayev continues in his letter: «I would like to remind that after the Tajik government banned the IRPT in 2015, the old man did not participate in IRPT activities and continued his private life.»
The member of the IRPT Supreme Council and former head of the party’s Rudaki branch also said: «As a former head of the IRPT branch in Rudaki and a person who knows the detainee well, I urge the UN Human Rights Organization and all opposition groups of the Tajik government, as well as all independent media, especially RFE/RL, Bomdod, Payom, Isloh and others, to make every effort for the release of the 87-year-old man.»
Condemning this inhumane act in the strongest terms, urges the relevant Tajik authorities to immediately release the 87-year-old man. It also hopes that all international human rights organizations and an active diplomatic corps in Tajikistan will not remain neutral and will make every effort to free this old man.
