We, family members and close relatives of Nusratullo Saidov, have gathered today to make a joint appeal to the authorities of Tajikistan. Nusratullo Saidov is the nephew of the late Said Abdullo Nuri, the leader of the United Tajik Opposition, whose signature is placed next to the signature of Emomali Rahmon on the Peace Agreement in Tajikistan.
The reason for today’s meeting was our deep concern over the arrest of our brother. As you already know from social networks and the media, on January 24, our brother Nusratullo Saidov was summoned to the police department of the Khatlon region and after a long interrogation was detained. However, to date, the authorities have not announced the reasons for his detention or arrest. After his arrest, he was not even allowed to contact his family.
On the morning of January 25, four other of our relatives and fellow villagers were summoned for interrogation, but they were released the same evening. In addition, representatives of law enforcement agencies came to the house of Saydullo Nuriddinov, who is one of our family members and is currently in prison, and also interrogated his mother.
Our relatives and members of our family have been repeatedly subjected to targeted pressure and persecution. In particular, the currently arrested Nusratullo Saidov was repeatedly summoned to the police department. Now among the authors of this appeal here, in exile in Europe, there are two members of our family who were tortured and excruciated for five days in the basement of the police department building, forcing them to emigrate from the country.
These and many other examples, which cannot be given here in full, are of great concern to us, because they raise our concern for the safety of our families and for the future of our children.
We strongly urge all law enforcement agencies of Tajikistan to refrain from any harassment and persecution of Nusratullo Saidov and our other relatives.
We call on the authorities to refrain from sowing fear and lawlessness among the people.
We call on the authorities to release Nusratullo Saidov as soon as possible and also declare our readiness to act within the law to release Nusratullo Saidov.
We also call on all human rights institutions and international organizations and individuals, as well as influential people, to pay serious attention to this problem.
